Messari (Data Screener); Reviewed & Scored | The Block Note
Crypto Data Screener Review · Updated August 2026

Messari: "the most powerful Screener in crypto," reviewed here on data and screening merits alone.

We reviewed Messari earlier in our Crypto News Platforms series, where it scored 56.75/100 on an editorial-independence-focused scorecard following Ryan Selkis's 2024 resignation as CEO and the company's subsequent acquisition by Blockworks. Here, we're reviewing it again as a distinct entry in our Crypto Data Screeners series, using a different scorecard built specifically for data accuracy, screening depth, coverage, and pricing rather than editorial conflicts. Real, disclosed genuine strengths: a genuinely deep, investor- and fundraising-focused screener spanning 14,000-plus funding rounds and 13,000-plus investors, and an AI research assistant built on 30-40TB of proprietary data. What we don't think should be set aside: the same 2024 leadership crisis and Blockworks acquisition remain relevant context here, and reported pricing is explicitly inconsistent with the platform's own listed rates. We weighted all of it below.

Our take, up front: Messari is a crypto research, screening, and data-analytics platform founded in 2018, now owned by Blockworks following a 2024 acquisition. Real, disclosed transparency note we want to state plainly: we reviewed Messari earlier in this project as part of our Crypto News Platforms series, scoring it 56.75/100 there using a scorecard weighted toward editorial independence and conflicts of interest. This is a separate review, using the distinct scorecard built for this Crypto Data Screeners series, weighing data accuracy, screening depth, market coverage, and pricing instead. Real, disclosed genuinely deep product on those specific terms: Messari's own site describes its screener as "the most powerful Screener in crypto," offering 50-plus filtering options across categories like meme coins, DeFi, L1/L2 networks, and stablecoins, built on a distinctive, hard-to-replicate dataset spanning 14,000-plus funding rounds, 800-plus M&A deals, and 13,000-plus investors, tracked across 500-plus sources. Real, disclosed AI-powered research layer: Messari Copilot, built on a reported 30-40TB of proprietary structured and unstructured data, offering "source-grounded responses with live data." Real, disclosed governance context carried forward from our earlier review: founder Ryan Selkis resigned as CEO in 2024 following inflammatory public conduct, and the company was subsequently acquired by Blockworks, an outlet whose own separate review in our News Platforms series flagged its own disclosed conflicts (editable podcast interviews, pay-to-speak conference slots). Real, disclosed pricing-transparency issue consistent with a pattern found elsewhere in this series: reported Pro-tier pricing (around $29/month) is "not always listed" on Messari's own pricing page, with a third-party review noting the company "sometimes adjusts tiers." Real, disclosed accessibility limitation: multiple reviews describe the platform and its data depth as something that "can be overwhelming for beginners" and "not designed for casual/novice users." We weighted all of it below.

Real, disclosed genuine institutional trust: described directly as "trusted by leading exchanges, asset managers, and financial institutions," with a real, disclosed reputation for standardizing complex, often-inconsistent crypto data across thousands of assets. What tempers this: as covered in our separate review of Messari within our Crypto News Platforms series, founder Ryan Selkis resigned as CEO in 2024 after inflammatory public conduct, and the company was subsequently acquired by Blockworks, an outlet whose own review in that series flagged separate disclosed conflicts. We found no confirmed data-manipulation or falsification scandal specific to Messari's own datasets.

Why this scores above the midpoint: genuine institutional trust and a real, disclosed reputation for data standardization are real positives, tempered by the disclosed 2024 leadership crisis and current ownership by an outlet with its own separate, disclosed conflicts.

Pros

  • Genuinely broad institutional trust, described directly as used by exchanges, asset managers, and financial institutions
  • No confirmed data-manipulation scandal specific to Messari's own datasets was found

Cons

  • A 2024 leadership crisis (covered in depth in our separate News Platforms review) remains relevant context
  • Current ownership by Blockworks carries forward that outlet's own separate, disclosed conflicts

Real, disclosed genuinely deep screening capability, described directly on Messari's own site as "the most powerful Screener in crypto": customizable filters across categories (meme coins, DeFi, L1/L2, stablecoins), 50-plus filtering options specifically for investors and funding-round data, and both pre-built and fully custom screeners tracking capital flows across sectors.

Why this scores among the best in this series: genuinely deep, broad, and distinctly investor/fundraising-focused screening capability.

Pros

  • 50+ filtering options for investor and funding-round data are genuinely distinctive in this series
  • Custom and pre-built screeners track capital flows across sectors and narratives

Cons

  • The sheer depth of filtering options can add real complexity for less experienced users

Real, disclosed solid market-data charting integrated with fundamental and on-chain context, though positioned more as a research and screening tool than a dedicated technical-analysis charting platform.

Why this scores below the midpoint: solid, functional charting is a real strength, but it's clearly secondary to the platform's core research and screening purpose.

Pros

  • Charts are integrated directly with fundamental, fundraising, and on-chain context

Cons

  • No custom-scripting or dedicated technical-indicator ecosystem comparable to a charting-first platform

Real, disclosed genuinely broad coverage: thousands of tracked assets, on-chain metrics across 50-plus networks, and a distinctive dataset spanning 14,000-plus funding rounds, 800-plus M&A deals, and 13,000-plus investors.

Why this scores well: genuinely broad asset coverage plus a distinctive, hard-to-replicate fundraising and investor dataset.

Pros

  • A distinctive, hard-to-replicate fundraising and investor dataset sets this apart in this series
  • On-chain metrics span 50+ networks alongside thousands of tracked assets

Cons

  • Total token/coin count is smaller than the largest general-purpose aggregators in this series

Real, disclosed genuinely useful free "Lite" tier offering curated watchlist digests and public reports. What tempers this: multiple reviews note the interface and data depth "can be overwhelming for beginners" and the platform is "not designed for casual/novice users or quick trading."

Why this scores below the midpoint: a real, disclosed free entry point is a genuine positive, tempered by a genuinely steep learning curve for non-professional users.

Pros

  • A free Lite tier gives genuine access to curated digests and public research

Cons

  • Multiple independent reviews describe the platform as overwhelming for beginners

Real, disclosed multi-tier structure (Lite, Pro, Enterprise) with flexible payment options (credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, ACH) at the Enterprise level. What tempers this: reported Pro pricing (~$29/month) is described directly as not always listed on the platform's own pricing page, with tiers "sometimes adjusted," and Enterprise-tier research is subject to a 90-day access delay for Pro subscribers.

Why this scores at the midpoint: a real, disclosed flexible tier structure is a genuine positive, tempered by disclosed pricing-page inconsistency and a delayed-access structure for lower tiers.

Pros

  • Flexible payment options at the Enterprise tier accommodate different institutional buyers

Cons

  • Reported Pro-tier pricing is not always listed on Messari's own pricing page
  • Enterprise-tier research is delayed 90 days for lower-tier subscribers

Real, disclosed genuinely distinctive additional tools: an AI research assistant (Copilot) built on 30-40TB of proprietary data, a token-unlock tracker, a governance tracker, an exchange-comparison tool, and the annual flagship "Crypto Theses" industry report.

Pros

  • A genuinely broad, distinctive set of extras extends well beyond core screening
  • The annual "Crypto Theses" report is a genuinely established, widely-cited industry document

Cons

  • Some extras (Enterprise research) require the highest, least-transparently-priced tier
Where to get it

Use the screener and fundraising data directly, but confirm current Pro pricing on Messari's own site before subscribing.

Given the real, disclosed pricing-page inconsistency we found, we'd verify the current Pro-tier rate directly with Messari before committing, and would treat the platform's investor and funding-round data, its most distinctive asset, as the primary reason to consider it over a general-purpose competitor.

0/ 100

A different scorecard, a different verdict, for reasons we think are legitimate.

We want to be upfront about something unusual in this review: we've already scored Messari once, in our Crypto News Platforms series, where it landed at 56.75/100 on a scorecard weighted heavily toward editorial independence, given the 2024 Selkis conduct crisis and the Blockworks acquisition that followed. Here it scores meaningfully higher, 66.5, and we don't think that's an inconsistency, it's a different question. This series asks whether Messari's screening and data tools are genuinely good, and on that specific question, the answer is clearly yes: a fundraising and investor dataset this deep, 14,000-plus rounds, 13,000-plus investors, isn't something we found replicated anywhere else in this series, and the screener itself is exactly as capable as Messari's own marketing claims. The governance history hasn't gone away, and we've carried it forward here rather than pretending it doesn't exist, but we don't think a real leadership crisis three years ago should erase real, current strength in the specific thing this review is measuring. Both scores are honest; they're just answering different questions.

The scorecard above is deliberately general. Whether Messari is right for you depends heavily on which of these you already are.

Best fit

The analyst or fund that needs deep fundraising, investor, and governance data alongside standard market screening

This is exactly where Messari's real, disclosed distinctive dataset delivers genuine, hard-to-replicate value.

Good fit

The reader who has also read our separate review of Messari's editorial and governance history in our News Platforms series

Given the real, disclosed governance context we carried forward here, reading both reviews genuinely matters for a complete picture.

Workable fit

The researcher interested in Messari Copilot's AI-powered, source-grounded research assistant

This is a real, disclosed, genuinely distinctive capability worth evaluating on its own separate merits.

Poor fit

The casual or beginner user who finds the platform's depth and interface overwhelming

Multiple real, disclosed reviews describe this exact limitation, making this a poor fit for that specific use case.

The scorecard covers the headline judgment calls. These four tables cover the specifics we didn't want to bury in prose; why this review scores Messari differently from our earlier one, the fundraising dataset examined precisely, the pricing inconsistency documented, and how all eight platforms in this series compare so far.

We're showing this side by side because we think transparency about methodology differences matters more than making two scores for the same company look artificially consistent.

We're flagging this as consistent with a pattern found repeatedly across this series; a reader should confirm current pricing directly with Messari rather than relying on any third-party figure, including ours.

Messari's score here reflects genuine credit for a uniquely deep fundraising and investor dataset and strong screening capability, tempered by the governance history we've now assessed twice, once as the central question, and once as important but secondary context.

We don't just want to hand you our number; we want to show you how it sits next to what other sources have published. We're flagging directly that general "best crypto research platform" round-ups and institutional sentiment tend to credit Messari's screening and data depth very highly, without weighing the pricing-transparency issues or the carried-forward governance history as directly as our methodology does.

The Block Note (us)N/A / 100
Industry averageN/A / 100

Our score lands modestly below the aggregated industry average; general and institutional sentiment credits Messari's genuine screening and research depth heavily, while giving considerably less direct weight to the pricing-page inconsistency and the governance history we carried forward from our earlier review.

Because it's reviewed in two different series against two different scorecards. Our Crypto News Platforms review (56.75/100) weighs editorial independence and conflicts of interest most heavily. This Crypto Data Screeners review (66.5/100) weighs data accuracy, screening depth, and coverage instead. Both are honest; they're answering different questions.

Messari was founded in 2018 by Ryan Selkis, who resigned as CEO in 2024 following inflammatory public conduct. The company was subsequently acquired by Blockworks, which now owns and operates it.

Its fundraising and investor dataset, reportedly covering 14,000-plus funding rounds, 800-plus M&A deals, and 13,000-plus investors, alongside 50-plus filtering options built specifically around that data.

A free Lite tier exists. Pro is reported around $29/month across public sources, though one review notes exact pricing "isn't always listed" on Messari's own page and tiers are "sometimes adjusted." Enterprise uses custom, seat-based pricing available by contacting sales.

Not especially. Multiple independent reviews describe the interface and data depth as overwhelming for beginners, and the platform is generally positioned toward analysts, funds, and researchers rather than casual or novice users.

Messari's AI research assistant, built on a reported 30-40 terabytes of proprietary structured and unstructured data, offering source-grounded responses using live market and research data.

Yes, covering 50-plus networks, alongside its market, fundraising, and governance data.

Messari's annual flagship industry report, covering sectors like DeFi, DePIN, AI, and stablecoins, widely cited as an industry-standard outlook document.

Our scores are set by the editorial methodology described above before any review is published, and we have no commercial relationship with Messari or its owner, Blockworks. Crypto data screeners carry real, structural risk regardless of which one you use: a company's leadership history and ownership changes remain relevant even when a review focuses primarily on data and product quality, reported pricing may not always match a provider's own current pricing page, and platforms built for professional or institutional users may carry a genuine learning curve for casual users. Nothing here is financial or investment advice.
