Career
Matthew Tan is a Malaysian-born entrepreneur and technology builder best known as the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Etherscan, the leading blockchain explorer, API and analytics platform for the Ethereum ecosystem. Under his leadership, Etherscan has become the go-to tool for developers, traders, auditors, and everyday users to search transactions, contracts, addresses, tokens, and other key on-chain data across Ethereum and other networks.
Tan originally developed Blockscan, a blockchain search engine for earlier smart contract platforms, and keenly recognized that existing explorers could not handle the growing complexity of smart contract activity. This insight drove him to build Etherscan in 2015, specifically optimized for Ethereum’s programmable ecosystem; a move that helped make on-chain data transparent and easily accessible for millions of participants worldwide.
More than just a data portal, Etherscan under Tan’s guidance has expanded into a suite of tools including developer-focused APIs, analytics dashboards, and support for multiple chains; positioning it as critical infrastructure for DeFi, NFT, and blockchain projects. The platform’s neutrality, accuracy, and depth of information have made it indispensable to market participants and security researchers alike.
Tan has over 15 years of experience in IT and software development and continues to shape how users interact with decentralized networks by prioritizing transparency, usability, and robust data services that empower both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
