Career

Joseph Lubin (born 1964 in Toronto, Canada) is a Canadian-American blockchain pioneer, entrepreneur, and key architect of the modern decentralized finance and Web3 landscape. He is best known as a co-founder of Ethereum, the breakthrough smart contract blockchain that underpins DeFi, NFTs, and decentralized applications globally, and as the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of ConsenSys, a leading blockchain software and infrastructure company.

Lubin studied Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Princeton University, where he built a strong technical foundation that later informed his work in distributed systems and cryptography. After early roles in software engineering, consulting, and financial technology; including positions focusing on cryptographic payment networks and technology leadership; he became deeply inspired by blockchain’s potential after reading Bitcoin’s whitepaper and then Vitalik Buterin’s vision for Ethereum.

In 2014, Lubin joined Ethereum as a co-founder and served as Chief Operating Officer of Ethereum Switzerland GmbH (EthSuisse), helping launch the network that expanded blockchain beyond simple transfers to programmable smart contracts. He subsequently founded ConsenSys in 2015, a blockchain studio that builds and supports essential Ethereum infrastructure and applications; from developer tools and enterprise solutions to widely used products like the MetaMask wallet.

Under Lubin’s leadership, ConsenSys has been a central force in advancing Ethereum’s developer ecosystem and pushing adoption of decentralized technologies across industries and governments. He remains a major advocate for open, decentralized systems and a decentralized global economy, viewing blockchain as a foundation for more equitable and transparent economic, social, and technological systems.
