Crypto Data Aggregator Review · Updated August 2026

Glassnode: the rare aggregator in this series with no exchange, no acquirer, and no cap-table conflict to report.

This is our third look at Glassnode, this time through the Data Aggregators lens: sourcing methodology and coverage, rather than the screening-tool depth we weighed in our Data Screeners series. Real, disclosed genuine strengths: immutable, point-in-time metrics specifically engineered to prevent the kind of data revision that quietly distorts backtests, and "entity-adjusted" on-chain metrics that filter out transfers that never actually changed economic ownership. What we found refreshing after a long run of ownership-conflict findings elsewhere in this series: Glassnode remains founder-led since 2018, with a single disclosed institutional investor, a venture studio with no exchange or trading-firm ties. We weighted all of it below.

Crypto Data Aggregator
Published research once found over 75% of Bitcoin's on-chain "volume" never actually changes hands
Founder-led since 2018; a single disclosed investor, no exchange or trading-firm ties found

Our take, up front: Glassnode is an on-chain and market data platform founded in 2018 in Switzerland by Jan Happel, Yann Allemann, and Rafael Schultze-Kraft, with Happel serving as CEO. This review uses a different scorecard than our earlier Data Screeners look at this platform: here we're weighing it specifically as a data aggregator, on sourcing methodology, coverage, and manipulation safeguards. Real, disclosed genuinely sophisticated methodological safeguard: Glassnode explicitly delivers "immutable, point-in-time metrics," directly addressing a real, disclosed data-integrity problem it names outright, that "backtests can produce misleading results when based on incorrect or revised data." Real, disclosed genuinely rigorous "entity-adjusted" metrics methodology: rather than treating every on-chain transfer as economically meaningful, Glassnode's published research found that "over 75% of Bitcoin's on-chain volume doesn't change hands," filtering out transfers like an exchange moving funds between its own wallets. Real, disclosed genuinely transparent, self-correcting research culture: published analyses have directly challenged popular narratives, including one titled "No, Bitcoin Ownership is not Highly Concentrated," a real, disclosed willingness to publish findings that complicate a simpler story. Real, disclosed genuinely clean ownership structure we found directly relevant to this series, after a long run of exchange-linked ownership and investment findings elsewhere: Glassnode remains founder-led since 2018, with business databases reporting a single institutional investor, WATTx, a venture studio with no disclosed exchange or trading-firm ties. Real, disclosed genuinely massive combined scale: 1,700-plus assets and 800 to 900-plus metrics spanning on-chain, spot, and derivatives data, including a newly-launched suite of cross-source metrics combining all three, plus up to 15 years of historical depth updating as frequently as every 10 minutes. Real, disclosed genuinely distinctive new index product: "a suite of continuous, rebalanced multi-asset indices for aggregate crypto market analysis." We weighted all of it below.

Real, disclosed genuinely sophisticated methodological safeguard: immutable, point-in-time metrics specifically designed to prevent backtest-distorting data revisions. Real, disclosed genuinely rigorous "entity-adjusted" methodology filtering out on-chain transfers that don't reflect real economic activity, backed by published research (over 75% of Bitcoin's on-chain volume found not to change hands). Real, disclosed genuinely transparent, self-correcting research culture willing to publish findings that complicate popular narratives. Real, disclosed genuinely clean ownership structure: founder-led since 2018, with a single disclosed institutional investor (a venture studio) and no exchange or trading-firm ties found.

Why this scores well above the midpoint: genuinely sophisticated, disclosed, self-correcting methodology is a real, substantial strength, credited highly given the absence of the ownership conflicts found repeatedly elsewhere in this series.

Pros

  • Point-in-time data integrity directly addresses a real, disclosed backtest-distortion risk most competitors don't name outright
  • Entity-adjusted metrics reflect genuinely rigorous, disclosed methodological care in distinguishing real activity from blockchain mechanics
  • A founder-led ownership structure with no disclosed exchange or trading-firm investor is a genuine rarity in this series

Cons

  • As an on-chain specialist expanding into market data, its price-aggregation methodology is less its core historical specialty

Real, disclosed massive scale: 1,700-plus assets and 800 to 900-plus metrics spanning on-chain, spot, and derivatives data, including a newly-launched cross-source metric suite combining all three, plus up to 15 years of historical depth updating as frequently as every 10 minutes.

Why this scores among the best in this series: genuinely broad, disclosed multi-source coverage is a real strength.

Pros

  • Combining on-chain, spot, and derivatives data into unified cross-source metrics is a genuinely distinctive, disclosed capability

Cons

  • Its exchange-level spot and derivatives coverage is a newer addition relative to its long-standing on-chain specialty

Real, disclosed genuinely rigorous entity-adjusted on-chain methodology filtering out economically-meaningless transfers, plus point-in-time data integrity specifically preventing look-ahead bias. What tempers this: as an on-chain specialist expanding into market and derivatives data, we found no equally detailed, named price-manipulation safeguard comparable to a dedicated price aggregator's disclosed outlier-filtering methodology.

Why this scores above the midpoint: genuinely rigorous on-chain data-integrity methodology is a real strength, tempered by less specific disclosed safeguards on the newer market-data side of the product.

Pros

  • Entity-adjusted filtering is itself a genuine, disclosed anti-distortion safeguard specific to on-chain data

Cons

  • No named, disclosed price-outlier or wash-trading-detection methodology comparable to a dedicated price aggregator was found

Real, disclosed genuinely distinctive new index product: "a suite of continuous, rebalanced multi-asset indices for aggregate crypto market analysis," built on Glassnode's combined on-chain-plus-market-data foundation, alongside genuinely novel named metrics like SOPR and MVRV variations that have become industry-referenced standards.

Why this scores above the midpoint: genuinely distinctive, disclosed benchmark and index products are a real strength.

Pros

  • SOPR and MVRV are genuinely disclosed, named metrics that have become industry-standard reference points beyond Glassnode itself

Cons

  • The new multi-asset index suite is recently launched and has less of a track record than more established competitors' benchmarks

Real, disclosed free tier exists, though the more meaningful workflow advantages sit behind higher-priced Studio tiers. Real, disclosed genuinely modern accessibility via an MCP server, letting AI agents discover, fetch, and analyze data across 1,700-plus assets and 900-plus metrics through LLM chat.

Why this scores above the midpoint: a real, disclosed free tier and genuinely modern AI-agent tooling are strengths, tempered by a standard freemium gate on deeper functionality.

Pros

  • An MCP server bringing the full metric library into LLM workflows is a genuinely modern, disclosed accessibility feature

Cons

  • The free tier's meaningful workflow advantage requires moving to a paid Studio tier

Real, disclosed tiered Studio pricing model with clear, disclosed plan boundaries and defined historical-data windows per tier, though specific enterprise and custom-data pricing requires direct contact, typical of this category.

Why this scores at the midpoint: a disclosed, structured tiered model is reasonable, tempered by the usual enterprise-pricing opacity found across this category.

Pros

  • Clearly-defined plan boundaries and historical-window limits per tier are a real, disclosed transparency practice

Cons

  • Custom or high-volume enterprise pricing is not published openly

Real, disclosed genuinely substantial public research output ("Glassnode Insights," a long-running, freely-published research library) plus a Glassnode Academy specifically built to teach the methodology behind each metric rather than presenting numbers without context.

Pros

  • A dedicated methodology-education resource (Academy) alongside free published research is a genuinely substantial, disclosed extra

Cons

  • The depth of this research is most valuable to readers already comfortable with on-chain analysis concepts
Where to get it

Genuinely rigorous methodology, and for once in this series, no ownership asterisk to attach to it.

Given the genuinely sophisticated, disclosed entity-adjusted and point-in-time methodology we found, we'd treat Glassnode's on-chain metrics as credible, high-confidence inputs for serious research, with the same baseline confidence in its ownership structure that we'd want but haven't always found elsewhere in this series.

0/ 100

The last review in this run, and it's a genuinely good note to end on.

We want to be honest about something as we close out this stretch of the series: after reviewing exchange-owned trackers, an FCA-regulated benchmark administrator absorbed into an exchange-owned parent, a token network with a scheduled unlock event, and an institutional data provider whose own investors now include an exchange it ranks, we went looking for Glassnode's version of the same story, and we didn't find one. Business databases show a single institutional investor, a venture studio with no stake in any exchange or trading desk, and a founding team that's still running the company eight years in. What we did find was a company willing to publish research that undercuts a popular narrative when the data says so, and a specific, disclosed methodological safeguard, point-in-time metrics, built for the unglamorous but important job of making sure a backtest run today gives the same answer a backtest run next year would have given about the same period. That's not the most exciting finding in this series. We think it might be one of the more important ones.

The scorecard above is deliberately general. Whether Glassnode is right for you depends heavily on which of these you already are.

Best fit

The serious on-chain researcher who wants entity-adjusted, point-in-time-accurate metrics for genuine model-building

This is exactly where Glassnode's real, disclosed methodological rigor delivers genuine, distinctive value.

Good fit

The analyst who reads Glassnode's own methodology write-ups before treating a specific metric as a standalone signal

Given the real, disclosed complexity behind metrics like SOPR and MVRV, this specific habit genuinely matters here.

Workable fit

The developer exploring the MCP server for AI-agent access to the full on-chain and market-data library

This is a real, disclosed, genuinely modern access model worth evaluating on its own separate merits.

Poor fit

Anyone wanting a fully free, unlimited alternative to a dedicated price aggregator's real-time market-data coverage

A real, disclosed freemium gate on deeper functionality makes this a poor fit for that specific need.

The scorecard covers the headline judgment calls. These four tables cover the specifics we didn't want to bury in prose; the entity-adjusted methodology explained, the ownership picture compared against this series' more common pattern, how this score compares to our earlier Data Screeners review, and the complete eighteen-aggregator comparison closing out this series.

The entity-adjusted methodology, explained

ConceptWhat it addresses
Entity-adjusted metricsFilters out transfers that don't reflect real economic activity, like an exchange moving funds between its own wallets
Point-in-time metricsPrevents later data revisions from silently changing what a historical backtest would have shown
Published findingOver 75% of Bitcoin's on-chain "volume" was found not to represent an actual change in ownership

We're explaining these because "entity-adjusted" and "point-in-time" are easy phrases to skim past; they represent specific, disclosed engineering choices addressing real, documented ways on-chain data can otherwise mislead.

The ownership picture, compared against this series' more common pattern

Typical pattern found elsewhere in this seriesGlassnode
OwnershipAcquired by, or invested in by, an exchange or trading firmFounder-led since 2018
InvestorsExchanges, market makers, or TradFi distribution partnersA single disclosed investor, a venture studio with no exchange or trading-firm ties

We're framing it this way deliberately; after nine reviews built around finding a real, disclosed structural conflict, we think it's worth being equally direct when the search turns up a clean result.

How this compares to our earlier Data Screeners review

SeriesLensScore
Crypto Data ScreenersOn-chain screening-tool depth65.25/100
Crypto Data Aggregators (this review)Aggregation methodology and sourcing rigor72.0/100

We're showing both because this is the rare case in our third-lens reviews where the Aggregator score lands higher; sourcing methodology, entity adjustment, and point-in-time integrity are closer to Glassnode's core strength than pure screening-tool breadth was.

Glassnode's score, the second-highest in this series, reflects genuine credit for sophisticated, disclosed data-integrity methodology and a clean ownership picture, a combination we found less often than we expected across eighteen aggregators reviewed in this series.

We don't just want to hand you our number; we want to show you how it sits next to what other sources have published. We're flagging directly that "best on-chain analytics platform" round-ups and researcher sentiment are already very positive here, since Glassnode's core on-chain specialty is genuinely well-regarded; our score sits only modestly below that consensus.

Our score lands only modestly below the aggregated industry average; researcher and analyst sentiment credits the on-chain methodology just as heavily as we do, with the small remaining gap reflecting our category's specific weight on price-aggregation safeguards, a newer, less-established part of Glassnode's product.

Glassnode was founded in 2018 by Jan Happel, Yann Allemann, and Rafael Schultze-Kraft, with Happel serving as CEO. Business databases report a single institutional investor, WATTx, a venture studio with no disclosed exchange or trading-firm ties.

A methodology that filters out on-chain transfers that don't represent real economic activity, such as an exchange moving funds between its own wallets. Glassnode's published research using this approach found that over 75% of Bitcoin's on-chain "volume" doesn't actually change hands.

Immutable historical data that doesn't get silently revised later. This prevents a backtest run today from getting a different answer than a backtest run at the time would have shown, a real, disclosed data-integrity safeguard.

Over 1,700 assets and 800 to 900-plus metrics spanning on-chain, spot, and derivatives data, with up to 15 years of historical depth updating as frequently as every 10 minutes.

Yes, a newly-launched suite of continuous, rebalanced multi-asset indices for aggregate crypto market analysis, alongside long-established named metrics like SOPR and MVRV that have become industry-referenced standards.

A free tier exists, but the meaningful workflow advantages, higher metric tiers, faster resolutions, and stronger alerting, sit behind paid Studio subscriptions.

Yes, an MCP server brings the full metric library into AI workflows, letting agents discover, fetch, and analyze data across 1,700-plus assets through LLM chat.

Our Data Screeners review scored Glassnode 65.25/100. This Data Aggregators review scores it higher, 72.0/100, because sourcing rigor and data-integrity methodology sit closer to Glassnode's core strength than pure screening-tool breadth did.

Editorial disclosure: This page contains no affiliate or referral links; Glassnode pays us nothing and receives no commission or consideration for this review. Our scores are set by the editorial methodology described above before any review is published, and we have no commercial relationship with Glassnode or its investors. Crypto data aggregators carry real, structural risk regardless of which one you use: a clean ownership picture at the time of review doesn't guarantee it stays that way, sophisticated on-chain methodology doesn't automatically extend to equally sophisticated price-manipulation safeguards, and a free tier's real limitations are worth understanding before relying on it for serious research. Nothing here is financial or investment advice.
