P2E Crypto Game Review · Updated August 2026

Genopets: a thoughtful, accessible move-to-earn pet game, sitting on a token down effectively 100%.

We're continuing our P2E Crypto Games series with Genopets, a free-to-play, move-to-earn mobile game on Solana that converts real-world steps into NFT pet evolution, founded around 2021 by a team whose co-founder Jay traces the concept back to a 2017 health-data NFT project on EOS. Real, disclosed genuine strengths: over 200,000 active players during private beta, described directly as one of the largest games on Solana at the time, a genuinely thoughtful accessibility design letting players start with just an email address, and a real, disclosed founder-alignment signal, in December 2022 the founders voluntarily extended their own token vesting by an additional year alongside investors. What we don't think should be set aside: CoinGecko states directly GENE is trading "-100.00% below" its all-time high of roughly $37.79-37.83, and we found a real, disclosed discrepancy across sources about the exact founding team, including one claim we could not corroborate elsewhere. We weighted all of it below.

CoinGecko: GENE is "-100.00% below" its all-time high

Our take, up front: Genopets is a free-to-play, move-to-earn mobile game on Solana that converts a player's real-world steps into Energy used to evolve an NFT pet, blending, in one detailed source's framing, the nurturing of Tamagotchi, the training and battling of Pokemon, and the fitness incentives of Strava. Real, disclosed origin story: co-founder Jay, in a direct, first-person podcast interview, traces the concept back to a 2017 health-data NFT project built on EOS, which evolved into the move-to-earn game as launched. Real, disclosed genuinely large early scale: the project reached over 200,000 active players during its private beta, described directly as one of the largest games on Solana at the time, built with an organic community the team says grew without paid acquisition. Real, disclosed genuinely thoughtful accessibility philosophy: co-founder Jay states directly that Web3 features are designed as "an optional expansion rather than a barrier to entry," letting players begin with just an email address and discover the crypto layer at their own pace. Real, disclosed team structure: roughly 24 full-time staff scaling to about 50 with contractors, including a dedicated tokenomics and game-economy team specifically tasked with keeping the in-game economy balanced. Real, disclosed genuinely positive founder-alignment signal: facing difficult market conditions in December 2022, the founders voluntarily extended their own token vesting by an additional year, to a full 4-year lock, alongside SAFT holders and lead investors, an act of disclosed solidarity with long-term token holders during a downturn. Real, disclosed continued ecosystem activity: an April 2024 partnership with the VGX Foundation added VGX as an additional in-game reward token. What we don't think should be set aside: GENE reached its all-time high most consistently reported around $37.79-37.83 (two independent, dedicated price sources agree closely on this figure, with one less-corroborated source reporting a lower $22.74), and CoinGecko states directly the token is now trading "-100.00% below that peak," among the most extreme, near-total token collapses we've documented across this entire series. Real, disclosed founder-identity discrepancy we want to flag directly: one source names an individual as co-founder that we could not corroborate in any other source we checked, while two independent sources, a first-person podcast interview and a business-data aggregator, more consistently point to "Jay Chang" as a real, named co-founder; a separate source names Benjamin Tse as an additional co-founder and Chief Product Officer. Real, disclosed genre-specific security consideration: a detailed source states directly that reliance on movement data creates potential vulnerabilities to spoofing or manipulation, describing this as "an evolving security concern" the team addresses through multiple verification layers. Real, disclosed audit-transparency gap: generic "security audits and bug bounty program" claims appear across several sources without a named, specific audit firm or report we could independently verify. No confirmed direct hack of Genopets' own game or token contracts was found in our research. We weighted all of it below.

Real, disclosed named co-founder (Jay Chang, sometimes referred to as "Jay"), corroborated by both a first-person podcast interview and an independent business-data aggregator. What we want to flag directly: a genuine, disclosed discrepancy across sources about the exact founding team, including one claim naming an individual we could not corroborate elsewhere. Real, disclosed genre-specific security consideration: a detailed source directly acknowledges movement-data spoofing as "an evolving security concern" addressed via multiple verification layers. Real, disclosed audit-transparency gap: generic "security audits and bug bounty" claims appear across several sources without a named, specific audit firm or report. No confirmed direct hack of Genopets' own game or token contracts was found in our research.

Why this scores at the midpoint: genuinely credible, named leadership corroborated by direct sourcing is a real positive, tempered by a real, disclosed founder-identity discrepancy and an unverified audit claim.

Pros

  • Named co-founder corroborated by both a first-person interview and independent business data
  • No confirmed direct hack of the game's own contracts found in our research

Cons

  • Sources genuinely disagree on the exact founding team, including one uncorroborated claim
  • Generic audit and bug-bounty claims lack a named, specific firm or verifiable report

Real, disclosed genuinely positive signal: facing difficult market conditions in December 2022, the founders voluntarily extended their own token vesting by an additional year to a 4-year lock, alongside SAFT holders and lead investors, aligning their own incentives with long-term holders. What tempers this severely: GENE reached an all-time high most consistently reported around $37.79-37.83, and CoinGecko states directly the token is now trading "-100.00% below that peak," among the most extreme, near-total token collapses we've documented in this entire series.

Why this scores among the lowest in this series: a genuinely positive, disclosed founder-alignment signal during a downturn is entirely overshadowed by a near-total, disclosed collapse in the token's value.

Pros

  • Founders voluntarily extended their own vesting alongside investors during a downturn

Cons

  • CoinGecko reports GENE trading effectively 100% below its all-time high
  • Current market capitalization has fallen to a small fraction of its former peak

Real, disclosed named co-founder with a direct, first-person account of the project's origin and design philosophy. Real, disclosed functioning GENE governance utility, including staking-linked voting on token emissions and game mechanics. What tempers this: the same real, disclosed founder-identity discrepancy noted above limits full confidence in exactly who leads the project as of our research.

Why this scores at the midpoint: genuinely disclosed leadership and a real governance mechanism are real positives, tempered by an unresolved, disclosed discrepancy in founder identification across our sources.

Pros

  • A real, disclosed governance mechanism ties GENE staking to actual emissions and mechanics votes

Cons

  • An unresolved, disclosed discrepancy in founder identification across our sources

Real, disclosed genuinely large early scale: over 200,000 active players during private beta, described directly as one of the largest games on Solana at the time. Real, disclosed thoughtful accessibility design: Web3 features are explicitly built as "an optional expansion rather than a barrier to entry." Real, disclosed genuine longevity: continued ecosystem partnerships (VGX Foundation, April 2024) years after launch.

Why this scores above the midpoint: a genuinely large early adoption base and a thoughtful, real accessibility-first design philosophy, tempered by our inability to independently confirm current player-count figures.

Pros

  • Over 200,000 active players during private beta, a real, disclosed large early scale
  • Continued, real ecosystem partnerships years after launch

Cons

  • Current, up-to-date player-count figures were not independently confirmed in our research

Real, disclosed genuinely accessible onboarding: players can start with just an email address, with crypto features layered in as an optional expansion rather than a requirement. Real, disclosed intuitive design drawing directly on familiar mechanics from Tamagotchi, Pokemon, and Strava.

Why this scores above the midpoint: a genuinely thoughtful, real accessibility design that lowers the barrier to entry more deliberately than many other games in this series.

Pros

  • Players can begin with just an email address; no wallet required upfront
  • Familiar, real mechanics borrowed from established, non-crypto games and apps

Cons

  • Reliance on device movement-tracking accuracy can vary across phones and wearables

Real, disclosed free-to-play core structure. Real, disclosed Habitat NFT requirement to passively generate KI and Crystals, representing a real, disclosed cost of entry for the token-earning side of the game specifically.

Why this scores at the midpoint: a genuinely accessible free-to-play core is a real strength, tempered by a real, disclosed Habitat NFT cost required to meaningfully participate in earning.

Pros

  • Core gameplay and pet nurturing are free-to-play without any purchase required

Cons

  • A Habitat NFT is required to passively generate KI and Crystals for earning

Real, disclosed distinctive Habitat NFT system generating passive Crystals and KI, and a real, disclosed dedicated tokenomics and game-economy team specifically focused on maintaining in-game economic balance.

Pros

  • A dedicated, real, disclosed team focused specifically on tokenomics and economic balance

Cons

  • That dedicated economic focus has not yet translated into a stable token value
Where to get it

Access only through the official app store listing, and treat any GENE or KI purchase as separate from simply enjoying the game.

Given the real, disclosed near-total collapse in GENE's value, play the free core game for its own accessible, real design first, and treat buying GENE or a Habitat NFT as a distinct, high-risk financial decision rather than something the gameplay itself requires.

0/ 100

A thoughtfully designed on-ramp into Web3, sitting on top of a token that's effectively gone to zero.

We want to give Genopets real credit for a design philosophy we don't see stated this directly very often in this series: crypto as an optional layer, not a prerequisite. Letting someone start with just an email address, evolve a pet through ordinary daily steps, and only encounter a wallet if and when they choose to is a genuinely thoughtful way to build for people who aren't crypto-native yet, and it appears to have worked, with over 200,000 active players during a private beta the team says grew organically. We also want to credit something we don't take for granted after reviewing this many projects: when the market turned in late 2022, the founders extended their own token lockup right alongside their investors, rather than asking holders to wait while insiders had already cashed out. None of that changes what actually happened to the token itself. A near-total collapse is a near-total collapse, and no accessibility design or founder gesture reverses that. We also want to be upfront that pinning down exactly who founded this project took more digging than it should have, a genuine, disclosed gap in an otherwise fairly transparent picture. Genopets built a genuinely welcoming front door. The room behind it still needs real repair.

The scorecard above is deliberately general. Whether Genopets is right for you depends heavily on which of these you already are.

Best fit

The fitness-minded newcomer to crypto who wants a genuinely gentle on-ramp, starting with just an email address

This is exactly where Genopets' real, disclosed accessibility-first design philosophy delivers value without financial exposure.

Good fit

The player who enjoys the free core game and pet-nurturing loop before ever considering a GENE or Habitat purchase

This lets you evaluate the genuinely accessible gameplay on its own terms, separate from the token's real, disclosed collapse.

Workable fit

The reader who treats the founding-team discrepancy we found as a reason to verify leadership claims independently

Given the real, disclosed disagreement across sources, this extra step genuinely matters here.

Poor fit

Anyone buying GENE or a Habitat NFT expecting the token's value to reflect the game's real, disclosed early user scale

A near-total, disclosed token collapse occurred despite genuinely large early adoption, a gap worth weighing directly.

The scorecard covers the headline judgment calls. These four tables cover the specifics we didn't want to bury in prose; the founder-identity discrepancy we found and how we handled it, GENE's price chronology, the December 2022 vesting extension explained, and how the dual-token structure actually works.

The founder-identity discrepancy, explained

SourceClaim
First-person podcast interviewCo-founder identifies himself as "Jay," tracing the project from a 2017 EOS health-data NFT concept
CBInsights (business-data aggregator)Independently lists "Jay Chang" as Genopets' founder
CoinbaseNames "Benjamin Tse" as a separate co-founder and Chief Product Officer
CoinpaprikaNames "Kieran O'Neill" as a co-founder, a claim we could not corroborate in any other source

We treat "Jay Chang" as the best-supported identity given two independent, corroborating sources, note Benjamin Tse as a separately-disclosed co-founder, and flag the "Kieran O'Neill" claim directly as unconfirmed rather than repeating it as settled fact.

Dec 2022Founders, SAFT holders, and lead investors agree to extend token vesting by an additional year
Recent snapshotCoinGecko reports GENE trading "-100.00% below" its all-time high, in the sub-penny range

A decline this close to total is among the most extreme we've documented in this series; we're citing CoinGecko's own stated percentage directly rather than rounding it ourselves.

The December 2022 vesting extension, explained

Detail
TriggerDifficult broader market conditions in late 2022
Who agreedA majority of SAFT holders, lead investors, and the founders
What changedThe private-sale vesting period was extended by an additional year
Founders' own commitmentFounders separately extended their own vesting an additional year, to a full 4-year lock

Founders voluntarily extending their own lockup, not just adjusting community-facing emissions, is a real, disclosed alignment signal distinct from softer gestures we've seen elsewhere in this series.

How the dual-token structure actually works

GENEKI
RoleGovernance and stakingIn-game utility currency
SupplyFixed at 100 millionEarned via Habitat NFTs based on level and activity
Primary useStaking rewards, Genesis NFT sales, crafting valuable itemsMarketplace purchases, crafting supplies, Habitat upgrades

GENE's fixed supply is a real, disclosed structural positive relative to uncapped utility tokens we've flagged elsewhere in this series, though it did not prevent the token's own near-total decline.

We don't just want to hand you our number; we want to show you how it sits next to what other review desks and comparison sites have published. We're flagging directly that most general coverage credits the game's accessibility design and early scale favorably without weighting the near-total token collapse as heavily as our methodology does.

The Block Note (us)N/A / 100
Industry averageN/A / 100

Our score lands meaningfully below the aggregated industry average; most sources we found emphasize the game's real, disclosed accessibility design and early user scale favorably, while giving less direct weight to GENE's near-total, disclosed collapse and the founder-identity discrepancy we found central to this review.

SourceScoreType

Scores compiled by our editorial team from publicly available reviews as of August 2026. "Editorial estimate" means the outlet didn't publish a single numeric score, so we converted their published verdict and sentiment into a comparable 100-point figure. Verify current figures directly with each source before citing them elsewhere.

Sources disagree somewhat. A first-person podcast interview and an independent business-data aggregator both point to "Jay Chang" as a co-founder. A separate source names Benjamin Tse as an additional co-founder and Chief Product Officer. One other source names a different individual we could not corroborate elsewhere.

GENE reached its all-time high most consistently reported around $37.79-37.83 in April 2022. CoinGecko now reports the token trading "-100.00% below that peak," among the most severe declines we've documented in this entire series.

Multiple sources reference "security audits and a bug bounty program," but none we found named a specific audit firm or provided a verifiable report, a real, disclosed transparency gap.

No. The core game is free-to-play, and players can start with just an email address. A Habitat NFT is required specifically to passively generate KI and Crystals for token earning.

GENE is the fixed-supply (100 million) governance and staking token. KI is the in-game utility currency, earned through Habitat NFTs based on level and activity, used for marketplace purchases and upgrades.

Yes. In December 2022, the founders voluntarily extended their own token vesting by an additional year, to a full 4-year lock, alongside a majority of SAFT holders and lead investors.

The project reached over 200,000 active players during its private beta around 2021, described directly as one of the largest games on Solana at the time. We did not find independently confirmed, current player-count figures.

No confirmed direct hack of Genopets' own game or token contracts was found in our research. A detailed source separately flags movement-data spoofing as a real, disclosed, ongoing security consideration distinct from smart-contract risk.

P2E crypto games carry real, structural risk regardless of which platform you use: token prices can collapse well below their launch valuation, reported volume and player-count figures are often self-reported or third-party-aggregated and can be difficult to verify independently, and NFT-based in-game assets can lose most of their value even if the underlying game continues operating normally.
