Career
Tyler Winklevoss is an American entrepreneur, investor, and cryptocurrency executive best known as the Co-Founder of Gemini, one of the world’s leading regulated cryptocurrency exchanges and digital asset platforms. Alongside his twin brother Cameron Winklevoss, he has become one of the most recognizable figures in the crypto industry and an early institutional advocate for Bitcoin and digital assets.
Winklevoss studied economics at Harvard University, where he gained national attention through his involvement in the early social networking project ConnectU and the subsequent legal dispute surrounding Facebook’s founding. After graduating, he and his brother later earned MBAs from the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford, strengthening their focus on entrepreneurship, technology, and global finance.
Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss became early Bitcoin investors around 2012, recognizing the cryptocurrency’s potential as a decentralized store of value and alternative monetary system. Their early conviction led them to accumulate one of the largest known individual Bitcoin holdings during the asset’s formative years, helping establish them as prominent advocates for institutional crypto adoption.
In 2014, the brothers founded Gemini, a New York-based cryptocurrency exchange built around regulatory compliance, security, and institutional trust. Under Tyler Winklevoss’s leadership, Gemini expanded into a full digital asset ecosystem offering spot trading, custody services, staking, stablecoins, institutional infrastructure, and crypto-based financial products. The company became known for emphasizing licensed operations and working closely with regulators during a period when much of the crypto industry operated with limited oversight.
Beyond Gemini, Winklevoss has been active as a venture capitalist and blockchain investor through Winklevoss Capital, supporting early crypto infrastructure companies, NFT platforms, and Web3 startups. He has also been a vocal advocate for Bitcoin as “digital gold” and for the broader role of decentralized technologies in reshaping financial systems, ownership, and internet infrastructure.
Throughout his career, Winklevoss has emphasized the importance of regulatory clarity, long-term infrastructure building, and institutional participation in digital assets. His work at Gemini and his early support for Bitcoin have made him one of the defining executives in the evolution of cryptocurrency from a niche technology into a mainstream global financial asset class.
