Career
Jean-Louis van der Velde is a Dutch technology executive and longtime cryptocurrency industry leader best known as the former Chief Executive Officer of Tether, the company behind USDT, the world’s largest stablecoin by market capitalization. He is also closely associated with the crypto exchange Bitfinex, where he held senior leadership roles during the formative years of the global digital asset industry.
Van der Velde built his early career in Asia, particularly in Hong Kong and Taiwan, where he worked in electronics manufacturing, enterprise technology, and international business operations. Before entering crypto, he held executive positions at technology companies focused on hardware production and embedded systems, developing expertise in scaling global operations and managing complex international supply chains.
He later transitioned into the blockchain and digital asset sector through his involvement with Bitfinex, eventually becoming CEO of the exchange. During his tenure, Bitfinex grew into one of the world’s largest crypto trading platforms, known for pioneering advanced trading features, margin products, and deep liquidity for professional traders.
As CEO of Tether, van der Velde oversaw the expansion of USDT from a niche crypto settlement tool into the dominant stablecoin used across centralized exchanges, decentralized finance (DeFi), remittances, and global digital asset markets. Under his leadership, Tether became a foundational component of crypto market liquidity, facilitating billions of dollars in daily transaction volume and supporting trading activity across numerous blockchain ecosystems.
His time leading Tether also coincided with heightened scrutiny from regulators, policymakers, and financial institutions regarding stablecoin reserves, transparency, and systemic importance. Van der Velde frequently emphasized Tether’s role in improving global access to digital dollars and enabling efficient cross-border value transfer, particularly in emerging markets underserved by traditional banking infrastructure.
Throughout his career, van der Velde has maintained a relatively low public profile despite overseeing some of the most influential companies in cryptocurrency. His leadership has had a lasting impact on the evolution of stablecoins, exchange liquidity infrastructure, and the broader integration of digital assets into global financial systems.
